Dacia

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Dacia was a land of mountains and rivers in ancient Europe.

It was home to people called the Dacians. Their land sat in the middle of the Carpathian Mountains. This area covered much of what we call Romania today. It also reached into parts of modern Moldova, Bulgaria, and Serbia.

The land stretched from the Black Sea in the east to the Tisza river in the west. It was a large and important place in the ancient world.

Life in Dacia was shaped by its many tribes. These groups often joined together under strong leaders.

They lived in settlements that often ended with the name "dava." This word meant a village or a town. For example, they had towns like Acidava and Argedava. Many of these towns were located near rivers or in the mountains. The people were known to be skilled and brave by those living nearby.

A great king named Burebista ruled from 82 BC to 44 BC.

He was a very powerful leader who united the Dacian and Getae tribes. Under his rule, the kingdom grew to its largest size. He even moved the capital to a place called Sarmizegetusa Regia.

Burebista wanted his people to be disciplined and strong. After he died in 44 BC, the large kingdom split into smaller parts. It took many years before the tribes became one group again.

Later, a king named Decebalus reunited the kingdom around AD 85.

He made Dacia a major force that even worried the Roman Empire. This led to a series of big wars between the Romans and the Dacians. The Romans fought many battles to take control of the land. Eventually, the Roman Emperor Trajan won these wars. By AD 106, Dacia became a new province of the Roman Empire.

The Romans changed how the land was organized. They destroyed the old capital at Sarmizegetusa Regia. However, they built a new capital city nearby called Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetuza.

Some Dacian people did not live under Roman rule. These "Free Dacians" stayed in the northern mountains. They lived in their own territory until the Migration Period began. Even after the empire changed, the history of Dacia remained a key part of the region.
