The land is shaped by many natural features. The Balkan Mountains sit to the north of the region. The Aegean Sea is to the south. The Black Sea is located to the east. These waters and mountains help define the area.

Many different people have lived in Thrace throughout history. The ancient Greeks gave the region its name. They called the people who lived there the Thracians. These Thracians were actually made of many different tribes. Some tribes lived in the high, rocky mountains. These mountain people were often known for being warriors. Other tribes lived on the flat, green plains. These groups were often more peaceable.

Some groups even lived as philosophers or priests.

Powerful empires have all wanted to control this land. In the late 6th century BC, the Persians took control. They called the area the Satrapy of Skudra. Later, in the 4th century BC, Philip II of Macedon conquered the region. His son, Alexander the Great, also ruled here. Thracian soldiers even traveled with Alexander on his big journeys.

Eventually, the Romans turned Thrace into a Roman province in 46 AD. This changed how the people lived and spoke.

Thrace has many large and busy cities today. Istanbul is one of the biggest cities in the region. Other important cities include Plovdiv, Çorlu, and Tekirdağ. You can also find people in Burgas, Edirne, and Stara Zagora. Many other places like Sliven and Yambol are also part of Thrace.

The people living there have different religions. Most Bulgarians and Greeks are Orthodox Christians. Many Turkish inhabitants are Sunni Muslims. There are also communities of Pomaks and Romani people.

Ancient stories often mention this interesting place. In Greek mythology, Thrace was named after a heroine named Thrace. She was the daughter of Oceanus and the sister of Europa. The Greeks also told stories about Thracian kings like Rhesus. Some myths say the Thracians had a special ancestor named Thrax.
