This sea gives the whole region its name. The name comes from Marmara Island. That island was named for the marble found there.

Many people live in this region. It has the largest population in Turkey. Even though it is the second-smallest region in size, it is very crowded. This means it is the most densely populated area in the country. Istanbul is the largest city in the region. Other big cities include Bursa and İzmit. You can also visit Balıkesir, Tekirdağ, Çanakkale, and Edirne.

Weather in the Marmara region changes depending on where you stand. The coasts near the Aegean and south Marmara have a mild climate. This is a mix of Mediterranean and humid subtropical weather. The Black Sea coast has an oceanic climate instead. Summers are usually warm or hot and somewhat dry. Winters can be cool and wet. Sometimes, the region even sees snow.
