Nature has shaped this land in a very strong way. A chain of mountains runs along the coast. These are the North Anatolian Mountains. In the west, they are not very high. In the east, the Kaçkar Mountains reach 3,000 to 4,000 meters. These mountains act like a giant wall. They make it hard to travel from the coast to the inside of the country. Most travel happens through a few narrow valleys.

The weather here is mild and very damp. It rains a lot throughout the whole year. This constant rain makes the land very green. The northern slopes of the mountains have thick forests. You can find many different types of trees there. In the east, the rain is even heavier than in the rest of Turkey. The sea water stays cool all year long. It stays between 8 and 20 degrees Celsius.
