Turkey is a land with a very rich culture. It sits between three different seas. It also sits on important trade paths. These things helped create many different kinds of dances.

Most of these dances are line dances. This means people dance together in a row. They might hold hands or link arms. These dances show the pride and skill of the people. They are a way for groups to share their traditions.

Many dances use specific instruments to create a rhythm. The Halay is a popular dance in central and eastern Turkey.

People often dance the Halay to a drum called a davul. They might also use a zurna, which is a pipe. Other instruments include the kaval, a shepherd's pipe, or the bağlama. The bağlama is a string instrument played with a plectrum. Some dances even use a reed called a sipsi. These sounds help guide the dancers through their steps.

Some dances are known for being very fast or very slow. The Horon is a circular dance from the Black Sea region.

It comes from the Laz culture. The music for the Horon is very quick. Because it is so fast, it is hard to play on some instruments. People often use a small zurna called a cura for these melodies. In other parts of the country, the Zeybek dance is common.

The Zeybek can be very slow or very fast. In the Burdur-Fethiye region, the teke dance is a fast Zeybek style.

There are many unique styles across different provinces. In the eastern part of Anatolia, people perform the Bar.

Dancers perform the Bar side-by-side with hands or shoulders linked. They often wear special costumes while they hop and dance with pride. In the Kars and Ardahan areas, people perform the Lezginka.

Another fun style is the Kaşık Oyunları, or spoon dances. These are found near the Mediterranean. Dancers use wooden spoons to keep the beat. They might dance to the sound of a clarinet or a violin.

Turkish dances connect the past to the present. Some dances, like the Kasap havasi, come from Byzantine times.

This dance was originally performed by butchers in Istanbul and East Thrace. Other dances like the Syrtos come from ancient Greece. Even the name Horon comes from a Greek word for dance. These traditions are passed down through many generations. They help people remember their history and their homes. Whether it is a wedding or a festival, dancing brings people together.
