To perform this dance, a person must have great control over their muscles. Most movements focus on the middle of the body rather than the arms or legs. Some movements are percussive, which means they are sharp and quick. These hits match the beat of a drum. Other movements are fluid and smooth like flowing water. Dancers use their abdominal muscles to make wavy shapes like figure-eights. They also use shimmies, which are very fast vibrations of the hips or ribs.

The history of this dance goes back a very long time. In ancient Egypt, drawings in tombs show women dancing to the rhythm of drums. The Greek historian Herodotus even wrote about Egyptians dancing in boats on the Nile. Later, in the Ottoman Empire, the dance was performed in palaces. In the 1800s, European travelers wrote about the dancers they saw in Egypt. They described groups like the Awalim and the Ghawazi.
