Instead of dancing with just one partner, anyone can join a circle, a semicircle, or a curved line. Dancers stay connected by holding hands, touching fingers, or placing hands on each other's shoulders. They follow a leader around the dance floor to the sound of singing or instruments. These dances can be very energetic and happy. They can also be calm and used for meditation. This style of dancing helps people feel a sense of togetherness and community.

There are many different ways to perform these dances. In the Hora dance from the Balkans, dancers hold hands and spin counterclockwise. They usually take three steps forward and one step back.

Very old cave paintings in India from the Mesolithic period show people dancing while holding hands. In Bosnia and Hercegovina, medieval tombstones called Stećci show figures dancing in a chain. These stones date from the end of the 12th century to the 1600s. In the 14th century, a sermon in Bulgaria even called these chain dances "devilish." In Germany, a dance called Reigen dates back to the 10th century. It may have started at early Christian festivals.

Many different cultures around the world have their own special circle dances.

Today, circle dancing connects many different parts of the world. Modern dancers mix old folk dances from Europe and the Near East with new music. Some people use circle dancing in religious worship, such as in the Church of England.

In these groups, people might place flowers in the center of the circle to help them stay focused. Whether it is a wedding or a festival, these dances bring people together through shared movement.
