Some people use dance to honor supernatural powers. Others might dance to help crops grow or to celebrate a wedding. Some dances are even used to help people heal from sickness. There are also dances used to honor people who have died. Because dance involves the human body, some groups have forbidden it. For example, some branches of Christianity and Islam have said dancing is not allowed.\n\nThere are many different ways that sacred dance works. A scholar named Harriet Lihs divided these dances into groups in 2009. Some are dances of imitation, like acting like animals or in a battle. Others are called medicine dances to help with healing. Some are commemorative dances for special events like the winter solstice. There are also dances used to create a spiritual connection.

In some traditions, dancers dance so hard they reach a state of ecstasy. This can make the body a temporary home for a deity. This type of movement is often called ecstatic dance.\n\nHistory shows that sacred dance has been a part of life for many cultures. In ancient Egypt, dancers acted like a goddess named Hathor. The Hebrew Bible also mentions many kinds of dancing. It describes people jumping, skipping, and whirling during worship. King David is said to have danced before the Lord with all his might.
