A Hindu temple is a sacred place for worship. Many people call these buildings a Mandir or a Kovil. These sites are seen as the home of a god.

The design helps people connect with the divine. The architecture tries to shrink the gap between humans and gods. Some temples act as simple houses for a deity. Others look like grand, monumental palaces.

These buildings are more than just places to pray. They serve as landmarks for art and community life.

Many temples use math and shapes to show big ideas. Some builders use a grid with 81 squares. This is called the Parama Sayika layout.

Each layer of the grid has a special meaning. The outer layers represent evil or Asuras. The next layer represents human life. The inner layers represent good or Devas. At the very center is the Garbhagriha. This is a quiet space for the main deity. It represents a universal principle that connects everything.

Ancient rules guide how these temples are built. These rules come from Sanskrit books called Vastu-Sastras.

These texts explain how to use geometry and symbols. They also describe the spiritual meaning of the structures. The design often uses circles and squares. These shapes reflect the relationship between the cosmos and the individual. Some temples are built to show the cycle of time. The layout can even use astronomical numbers. This helps the temple match the patterns of the universe.

Finding the right place for a temple is very important. Ancient texts suggest building near water and gardens.

Places with flowers, birds, and calm animals are best. Many temples sit near rivers, lakes, or the seashore. Some are built in caves or on high hills. Others might be in forests or at the head of a town.

Even if there is no natural water, builders might make a pond. This creates a peaceful space for the gods to play.

Hindu temples are found all over the world. You can find them in South Asia in places like India and Nepal. They are also in Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and Cambodia.

Today, people have built them in many other lands. You can find temples in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. One very large temple is the Swaminarayanan Akshardham in New Jersey.

These temples are places for festivals, music, and weddings. They are central to the social and economic life of many communities.
