Worship is a way people show deep devotion to a god or a divine being.

For many, it is not just a feeling or an emotion. It is a way to recognize what they believe in. The word itself comes from an old English term. It meant to give "worth" to something. This is why some people call it "worth-ship." People can worship in many different ways. Some do it by themselves in private. Others join a group for a formal or informal service. A leader might guide the whole group through the acts.

In Buddhism, worship can take many different forms. This is because of a teaching called skillful means. Some Buddhists use chanting or a tea ceremony. Others might practice the discipline of Shaolin monks. A very important part of worship is puja. This includes bowing, making offerings, or chanting. Many people do these things at home every day. They might do them in the morning or evening. They also do them during special festivals at a temple.

Meditation is another central way to worship in Buddhism. It is part of the Eightfold Path. This path helps people reach a state called enlightenment. Meditation helps a person explore their own mind and spirit. It often combines two parts: calming the mind and seeing clearly. By focusing on something simple, the mind can expand. This can lead to kindness and peace.

Christianity also has many ways to show honor to God. Many Christians gather for a church service. This is a time to learn about the Bible. The word "church" often means the people, not just the building. In the Catholic Church, the Mass is the main act of worship. Some groups, like Anglicans, use private prayer to grow closer to God. Some Christians make a distinction between two types of honor. They call one "adoration" for God alone. They call the other "veneration" for saints.

Other religions have their own special ways to connect with the divine. In Islam, worship includes following Islamic law. A key part is praying five times every day. This includes a movement called Sujud, where a person bows down. In Hinduism, worship is described as both a science and an art. It often involves a feeling of devotional love called bhakti. People might use art or personal reflection to worship. They do this to help their mind and spirit grow.
