People feel this way about a person, a place, or a thing. It can also be a way to show strong admiration. The word comes from the Latin term adōrātiō. This old word means to give honor or worship to someone. It is a way to show that something is very special. Many different cultures have found ways to show this feeling.

In ancient Rome, people had specific ways to show adoration. This was often done during special rites. A person would raise their hand to their mouth. They would kiss their hand and then wave it toward the object. Sometimes, people would cover their heads during these acts. They might even kiss the feet or knees of images of gods. For gods like Saturn or Hercules, people kept their heads bare.

Over time, these ways of showing honor changed. At first, people only showed adoration to divine beings. Later, they began to show it to monarchs or rulers. Greek and Roman emperors were adored in new ways. People would bow or kneel before them. They might hold onto an imperial robe. They would then press the robe or their hand to their lips.

In the ancient Middle East, adoration was often done very low to the ground. In Persia, a method was used by Cyrus the Great. A person would kiss the knee of a prince. They would then fall on their face at the prince's feet. They might strike the earth with their forehead a certain number of times. The Jews also used kissing to show honor. The Old Testament mentions people bowing their knees or kissing.

Many people today use adoration in their religious faith. In the Christian faith, believers adore Christ. In the Catholic Church, some practice Eucharistic adoration. This is a way to have a personal encounter with the Lord. Some churches even have special adoration chapels. In these rooms, the Eucharist is shown for people to observe. One priest, the Curé of Ars, spent many hours this way. He said he would just look at the Lord while the Lord looked at him.
