Many religions use this to respect those seen as very holy. For example, people might honor saints or holy relics. A relic is an object that belonged to a holy person. This practice is found in many different belief systems around the world. It helps people connect with the goodness they see in others. It is a way to celebrate a life of great virtue.

People show veneration in many different ways.

Christianity has a very long history of this practice.

It began as early as the first century with the honoring of martyrs. The apostle Paul even mentioned saints in his early writings. Over time, the Church began to honor people who lived very holy lives. Different groups within Christianity have different ways of doing this. Some groups, like the Catholic and Orthodox churches, have official ways to name a saint. Other groups, like the Reformed Christians, do not practice this.

Different religions have their own special names and traditions.

In Buddhism, people honor those who reached enlightenment, such as Bodhisattvas. In Hinduism, followers show respect to holy teachers called gurus. Some Muslims also practice veneration for saints in places like Turkey or Egypt. In Judaism, there is a long history of showing reverence to biblical heroes. Even in Morocco, some Jewish traditions include honoring saints. Each culture finds its own way to show this respect.

It is important to understand how different groups view these honors.

In Catholic teaching, there is a big difference between worship and veneration. Worship, or "latria," is meant for God alone. Veneration, or "dulia," is the honor given to created people like saints. Some thinkers even use special words for the high honor given to Mary. This helps people keep their focus on what they believe is most important. It shows how much thought people put into their faith.
