The word "fan" has a very interesting history. It is a short version of the word "fanatic." The word fanatic entered the English language around 1550. It originally came from a Latin word meaning "insanely but divinely inspired." This old word was used to describe sacred places. Some people think the word "fan" comes from "the fancy." This was a term for people who loved specific hobbies. In 1882, a man named Chris von der Ahe used it. He owned the Saint Louis Brown Stockings baseball team.
