Patriotism is a strong feeling of love and devotion to one's country. It is a sense of attachment to a specific place or state. This feeling can come from many different things. People might feel patriotic about their shared language or their history. It can also come from a shared culture or political ideas.

Some people call this civic nationalism. Others call it cultural nationalism. It is a way for people to feel connected to their homeland.

There are many ways to understand how patriotism works. Some people focus on their shared culture to build unity. They might work to keep traditional customs alive. Other forms of patriotism focus more on shared political rules. This is often called civic patriotism. It focuses on the laws rather than ethnic background.

Sometimes, people use religion to strengthen these feelings. This can create a bond between a nation and its faith. However, some thinkers believe faith and patriotism should stay separate.

Ideas about loyalty have changed a lot through history. In the 1700s, thinkers in Europe studied these ideas. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a very influential person in this time. He believed people should be loyal to their state. Other thinkers were more worried about too much patriotism. In 1774, Samuel Johnson wrote a critique of false patriotism. He famously called it the last refuge of the scoundrel.

People often compare patriotism to nationalism today. Many people see a big difference between them. The writer George Orwell had a clear way to explain it. He said patriotism is devotion to a way of life. He believed a patriot does not want to force that life on others. In contrast, he said nationalism is about the desire for power.

This distinction helps people understand why the words feel different. One is about pride, while the other is about control.

Not everyone agrees that patriotism is a good thing. Some thinkers, like the Japanese writer Kōtoku Shūsui, spoke against it. He believed it could make people stop caring about others. He used the idea of empathy to make his point. Anarchists like Emma Goldman also had strong views. She thought patriotism made people feel too arrogant. She said it divided the world into small spots with iron gates.
