This often means attacking the government you belong to. A person might try to overthrow their leaders. They might also spy on military officials for an enemy. Some people might even try to kill a head of state. Someone who does these things is called a traitor. The word comes from the Latin word "tradere." This means to hand over or deliver.

Historically, the term was used for Christians who betrayed others during Roman persecutions.

In the past, rules for treason were very specific. Long ago, laws covered many different kinds of disloyalty. High treason was disloyalty against a king or queen. Petty treason was disloyalty against a social superior. This included a servant harming a master or a wife harming a husband. Over time, most places stopped using the term petty treason. Now, "treason" usually refers to what used to be called high treason.

In England, the Treason Act 1351 was a very important law. It was the first time the crime was written down as a statute.

History shows that the definition of treason can change. In the 17th and 18th centuries, big revolutions happened. During the English and French Revolutions, ideas about loyalty shifted. People began to believe that the nation or the people held the power. This meant a king could actually be a traitor to his own people. For example, King Charles I of England and King Louis XVI of France were both executed for treason.

Legal cases often show how hard it is to define treason. During the American Revolution, a man named Billy was accused of treason in Virginia. He had joined the British side during the war. However, Thomas Jefferson helped him by offering a pardon. Jefferson argued that Billy was not a citizen of Virginia. Because he was not a citizen, he did not owe the state loyalty.

Another famous case involved William Joyce, known as Lord Haw-Haw. He broadcasted propaganda for the Nazis during World War II. The court found him guilty because he had used a British passport.

Today, different countries have their own specific laws. In Australia, treason can lead to life in prison. In Brazil, treason is a crime of disloyalty by a citizen. During wartime in Brazil, it is the only crime that can lead to the death penalty. Many modern laws also look at "insurrection" or helping a foreign enemy.

These rules help nations manage how people show their loyalty. They help decide what happens when someone acts against their own country.
