The goal is to make a person in charge break their official duties or honesty. This gift is often called a bribe. A bribe is not just cash. It can be property, a special job, or even a promise. It might be a free trip or a big discount. If a gift is available to everyone, it is not a bribe. However, a special gift meant to influence a decision is wrong.

Bribery works in many different ways. A person might offer money to get a faster service from a government worker. A driver might give money to a police officer to avoid a ticket. Sometimes, a person might pay for a higher-paying job or a special promotion. In some cases, a person might even try to buy votes in an election. There are two main types of this act. One type is when a person with power is paid to act unjustly. The other type is when someone buys the power to make decisions. Sometimes, a person might even be forced to pay, which is called extortion.

History shows that bribery has changed how societies and trade work. Researchers found that bribery can become a normal part of how a society acts. This makes it very hard to stop with just one rule. If a punishment works in one country, it might not work in another. In 2007, bribery was thought to be worth one trillion dollars across the world. This shows how big the problem can be for many nations. Some countries even become known as kleptocracies when bribery is a way of life.

Different cultures have many names for these secret payments. In German, people sometimes call it "lubricant money." In some Spanish-speaking countries, it is called a "bite." In Arab countries, people may use the words "baksheesh" or "shay." French-speaking areas might use terms like "under-the-table" commissions. These names show how different people view these actions. In the United States, some political donations are legal if they follow election laws. But in other countries, those same payments are crimes.

Bribery can also affect important things like medicine and healthcare. Some drug companies might give gifts to doctors to encourage them to use certain medicines. The American Medical Association has rules to stop this from happening. In some parts of the world, patients might give gifts to doctors to get better care. This often happens in places where medical workers are not paid well. Many groups are working to make things better and fairer. The United Nations has a goal to reduce bribery to help ensure peace and justice.
