Money laundering is a way to hide where bad money comes from. People get money through illegal acts like drug trafficking or corruption. This is often called "dirty money." To use it safely, they must make it look like it came from a legal source. This process is called money laundering.

It is a major topic for leaders and lawyers around the world. Most countries now have rules to stop these activities.

There are three main steps in this process. First is placement, where cash enters the financial system. This might happen through a business or a bank. Second is layering, which means moving the money through many steps. This makes the original source very hard to find. The third step is integration. This is when the money is finally used as if it were clean.

Some people use service businesses like car washes or bars to do this. These businesses often take a lot of cash from customers.

Laws to fight this have changed over many years. In the 1930s, the U.S. used old laws during Prohibition. This was a time when selling alcohol was illegal. A famous gangster named Al Capone was caught for tax evasion. In the 1980s, the war on drugs led to new rules. These rules helped governments try to catch drug crime leaders.

After the attacks on September 11, 2001, laws grew even more. This helped leaders fight terrorism financing across the globe.

Many big banks have faced large fines for breaking these rules. In 2012, HSBC was fined $1.9 billion in the U.S. In 2014, BNP Paribas was fined $8.9 billion. Some countries also watch how much cash people carry across borders. Australia set up the AUSTRAC system in 2006 to report transactions.

Today, digital money like cryptocurrency is also a concern. In 2021, criminals used $14 billion in cryptocurrency for illegal acts.

Money laundering can happen in many different places. Criminal groups use many paths to move their funds. Some use the art market because art prices can change. Others use casinos or online gambling to hide money. In Southeast Asia, areas like the Golden Triangle are known hotspots.

Even large digital marketplaces like Huione have been identified by experts. Law enforcement agencies work hard to watch these global systems. They want to keep the world's money safe and honest.
