There are three main steps to this. First, they put cash into a bank or a business. This is called placement. Next, they move the money through many steps. This is called layering. This makes the path hard to follow. Last, they use the money like it is real. This is called integration.

One way to do this is through service businesses. A car wash or a bar gets a lot of cash. A person can mix bad money with the good money. It is hard to tell them apart. Some people also use small deposits to hide money. This is called smurfing.

Governments work hard to stop this. They use new rules to watch how money moves. In the U.S., laws grew after the war on drugs. Today, people also use digital money called cryptocurrency. This can be a new way to hide funds. Law makers try to keep the world's money safe.
