A scam is a type of trick used to steal. It is also called a confidence trick or a con game. The person doing the trick is a scammer or a con artist. They gain someone's trust before they take their money. This works because they use a person's kindness or greed. They might also use a person's desire to be important. These tricks are not fair to anyone involved.

Scams can happen in different ways. A short con is a very fast trick. It might only take a few minutes or even seconds. These often target money or valuables a person is carrying. A long con is much bigger and takes more time. It can last for many days or even weeks. A team of people might work together on a long con. They might use costumes, sets, and even scripts to fool someone.
