It is also called thimblerig or the old army game. Players watch a person move small covers around on a flat surface. A small marker, like a ball, is hidden under one cover. The goal is to guess which cover holds the ball. Often, an operator offers to double a player's money if they win. This game is very exciting to watch because it is so fast.

To play, the operator uses three or more identical containers. These might be shells, cups, or even bottle caps. The operator places them face-down so no one can see the ball. Then, they shuffle the containers in plain view of the crowd. In a fair game, the player must follow the movement closely. However, the game is often used as a confidence trick. This is a quick swindle called a short-con. The operator uses sleight of hand to hide the ball. They might even use helpers to make the game look real.

This game has a very long and interesting history. It may have roots going back to Ancient Greece. Some versions are related to a magic trick called cups and balls. This trick has been around since Egyptian times. In the Middle Ages, artists painted people performing these routines. Later, people used walnut shells to play the game. The name thimblerig comes from using sewing thimbles. The first time we see that specific name was in 1826. During the nineteenth century, the game became very popular at traveling fairs.

Many people have made a living playing this game. In 1858, William Powell Frith painted a group called a thimblerig team. These teams included an operator and their accomplices. One famous man named Soapy Smith led gangs of shell men. He operated in the mid-western United States and Alaska. Today, you can find the game in many big cities. People play it in places like London, Paris, and New York City. It is often set up where many tourists gather. Because it is often used for cheating, it is illegal in most countries.

You might recognize this game from seeing it on television. The game show The Price Is Right has a similar version. In that version, players try to find a ball under four shells. These shells are made to look like walnut shells. To keep it fair, the host only shuffles them once at the start. No more shuffling is allowed after the first prize is named. This ensures the game follows rules and is not a trick. It shows how a simple idea can become a fun contest.
