A person puts a small ball under a cover. These covers might be shells or cups. They might even be bottle caps.

The person moves the covers around very fast. Players bet money to guess where the ball is.

This game is very old. It may have started in Ancient Greece. Long ago, people used walnut shells. Some people call it thimblerig. This name comes from using sewing thimbles.

Many people play this game to trick others. This is called a confidence trick. The person moving the shells uses fast hands. They use sleight of hand to hide the ball. They may even use helpers to trick you. This makes the game unfair. Because of this, the game is illegal in most places.

You can still see it in big cities. It is often played where many tourists go. Even TV shows use it for fun games. But on TV, the rules make sure it is fair.
