Juggling is a physical skill that uses the body to move objects.

A person who does this is called a juggler. Most people recognize toss juggling, where objects are thrown into the air and caught in a rhythm.

Jugglers use objects called props to perform. Common props include balls, rings, or clubs. Some performers use more dramatic items like knives, fire torches, or even chainsaws.

Other styles include contact juggling, where the object stays against the body. You might also see people spinning plates or using a yo-yo.

There are many different ways to perform these skills. Toss juggling is the most famous method. In this style, you keep objects moving without letting them touch the ground.

Another way is bounce juggling, which uses balls that hit the floor. Some jugglers use contact juggling to move objects smoothly along their skin. You can also try balancing or spinning objects to create patterns. Some experts even use a special system called Siteswap Notation to share these patterns. This helps jugglers all over the world learn new moves from each other.

Juggling has been around for a very long time.

Ancient Egyptian wall paintings show dancers and acrobats throwing balls. These paintings were found in a tomb in Egypt. In ancient China, juggling was even an art for warriors. One warrior named Xiong Yiliao reportedly used nine balls to win a battle. In Europe, jugglers were sometimes called gleemen. During the Middle Ages, they often performed in marketplaces or fairs. They would perform funny acts and pass a hat for tips.

History shows that juggling has changed many times.

In 1768, Philip Astley opened the first modern circus. This helped link juggling to the circus world we know today. In the 1800s, famous troupes like the Indian Jugglers toured Britain and America. They were very popular with many different kinds of families. Later, the invention of rubber changed everything for jugglers. Before rubber, they used balls made of twine, leather, or wood. Rubber balls allowed for much easier spinning and bouncing.

Today, juggling is both a job and a fun hobby.

Many people join local clubs or university groups to practice. The International Jugglers' Association was started in 1947 to help professionals. Now, even non-performers can join to celebrate the art. Every year, people celebrate World Juggling Day in June. This day helps teach new people how to juggle. It also brings the whole community together to celebrate their shared skill.
