A person performing these feats is known as a juggler. While many people view juggling as simply throwing and catching things, experts often describe it as a physically challenging feat. It requires complex visual patterns and intense mind-body coordination.

Today, the term often covers all forms of prop manipulation. This includes skills like spinning plates, using a yo-yo, or even contact juggling. Juggling can be a professional career or a personal hobby.

There are several distinct methods used to manipulate objects. The most recognizable form is toss juggling. In this method, the juggler throws objects into the air and catches them in a rhythmic pattern.

Another method is bounce juggling, where the performer uses the floor to keep objects in motion. Contact juggling is a different style where the object remains in constant contact with the body.

Other categories include balancing, known as equilibristics, and gyroscopic juggling, which focuses on spinning objects. To communicate these complex movements, jugglers use a system called Siteswap Notation. This mathematical notation allows performers to share specific patterns with others worldwide.

Jugglers use various objects, which are professionally referred to as props. Common props include balls, clubs, and rings.

Some performers choose more dramatic or dangerous items like knives, fire torches, or even chainsaws.

Other specialized props include diabolos, devil sticks, cigar boxes, and shaker cups. The material of these props has changed over time. Before the development of rubber processing, jugglers used balls made of twine, leather, wood, or metal. The invention of solid or inflatable rubber balls revolutionized the craft. These new materials made both bounce juggling and ball spinning much easier to perform.

History shows that juggling is an ancient practice found in many civilizations.

The earliest records appear in an Egyptian tomb from the Beni Hasan period. These paintings depict female dancers and acrobats throwing balls. In ancient China, juggling was even practiced by warriors. A warrior named Xiong Yiliao reportedly used nine balls to influence a battlefield. In Europe, the history of juggling has seen many shifts. During the Middle Ages, performers called gleemen often worked in marketplaces or fairs. They performed short, humorous acts and collected tips in hats or bags.

As time passed, juggling became closely linked to the circus. In 1768, Philip Astley opened the first modern circus, which employed jugglers alongside clowns and horses.

In the 19th century, famous troupes like the "Indian Jugglers" toured Britain, Europe, and America. These performers were highly popular with many different social classes. Later, variety and music hall theatres used jugglers to fill time during set changes. By the 20th century, the rise of radio and television changed the industry. Because jugglers cannot easily transfer their physical skills to a radio broadcast, the profession faced new challenges.

In the modern era, juggling has evolved into a thriving global culture.

The International Jugglers' Association was founded in 1947. While it began for professional vaudeville performers, it now welcomes hobbyists as well. This organization holds annual summer conventions that serve as the backbone of the community. These festivals include workshops, competitions, and public shows. Many cities now have juggling clubs, often connected to universities or community circus groups. Since the 1980s, the scene has expanded to include magazines, websites, and internet forums.

One important way the community stays connected is through World Juggling Day. This annual event is held on the Saturday in June closest to June 17th. This date honors the founding of the International Jugglers' Association. The day is intended to teach new people how to juggle and to celebrate the skill.
