Performers use many different objects to move the fire around. These tools usually have wicks made of special material to hold liquid fuel. This fuel allows the flames to stay lit during the show.

Some people use skills like juggling or baton twirling with the fire. Others might do fire breathing or fire eating. There are also choreographed routines set to music. These can look like rhythmic gymnastics or beautiful dances.

All fire shows carry risks, so experts suggest using safety rules.

There are many ways to use fire tools.

One common tool is called poi, which means "ball on a string" in the Māori language. Performers spin these on long chains or ropes. Another tool is the staff, which is a long tube. Some staffs are two meters long and used in pairs. You might also see a dragonstaff with wicks arranged in a wheel. There are even fire fans with wicks on the edges. Some performers use fire swords or fire hoops to create shapes. Even small items like fire fingers or palm torches are used.

Fire dancing has a very long history in many lands.

In ancient Jerusalem, there are mentions of fire during Jewish holidays. A man named Rabbi Simeon ben Gamaliel reportedly tossed eight burning torches. He caught them all without them ever touching. The ancient Aztecs also had a fire dance for their god, Xiuhtecuhtli. In Bali, the Fire Dance began as an ancient ritual called sanghyang. This was a trance dance used to ward off witches. In India, the Siddha Jats perform fire dances during a spring festival. They might jump in and out of pits filled with glowing embers.

Many different cultures have their own special ways to perform.

The Māori people of New Zealand are the originators of poi. In Hawaii, lighting poi on fire became popular in the 1950s. In Polynesia, fire knives have been used since the 1940s. Today, you can find fire dances in places like Jamaica and Cuba. Some shows are even part of the Burning Man festival. Since the mid-1990s, fire performance has grown very quickly. People now do it as a hobby or a professional job. It is seen at music festivals, nightclubs, and street parties.

Modern fire shows can be many different things. Some are traditional shows that use Polynesian costumes. Other shows are called fire theatre, where fire is part of a play. Some performers combine fire with Middle Eastern belly dancing. This is often done using fire swords that look like scimitars. You can even find fire jugglers who use comedy in their acts. Some performers use large machines like fire cannons. These can shoot a pillar of fire up to 200 feet high. Fire performance brings people together through wonder and skill.
