It provides bright light and warmth for people sitting together. Many people use campfires to cook delicious food.

A fire can also act as a beacon to show where people are. It may even help keep insects and predators away from a camp. In some summer camps, a campfire is a special event or ceremony.

Building a fire involves three main types of materials. First, you start with tinder, which is very thin material.

Things like birch bark, cedar bark, or dry grass work well. Next, you add kindling, which are sticks bigger than tinder but smaller than logs. These can be as thin as a finger or as thick as a wrist. Finally, you use fuel wood, which are larger logs. These logs can burn for many hours at a time.

Humans have been using fire for a very long time. Scientists found bones in South Africa that suggest people used fire 1.6 million years ago.

In Wonderwerk Cave near the Kalahari Desert, researchers found even older evidence. This evidence comes from tiny bits of plant ash and charred bone. These findings suggest humans were cooking food as far back as 1.9 million years ago. Using fire has been a part of human life for a huge amount of time.

There are many different ways to shape a fire. A teepee fire is built by leaning sticks together like a small tent.

This style is great for making heat. A log cabin fire is built by stacking sticks in a square shape.

This style is very stable and good for cooking. You can also build a hybrid fire. This uses a small teepee inside a log cabin shape to stay strong.

Safety is the most important part of having a campfire. You should always build a fire in a safe ring made of stone or steel.

It is smart to clear a ten-foot circle around the fire to remove dry leaves. Never leave a fire alone while it is burning. When you are finished, use plenty of water and dirt to put it out. You must stir the mixture and check that no hot embers are left.

Always make sure the ground is cool before you leave.
