A person might demand money, goods, or special favors. They do this by making threats. They might threaten to hurt someone later. They might also threaten to share secrets. This is different from robbery. In a robbery, someone uses force right away. In extortion, the threat is usually in words. These words can be spoken or written.

They can even be sent through a computer.

There are many ways this works in the real world. Sometimes it is called a protection racket. This is when someone asks for money to keep a person safe. Often, the person asking for money is the same one who would cause harm. This is a trick to make people pay. Other times, it is called blackmail. In blackmail, the person threatens to share embarrassing secrets. They might use pictures or private facts to get what they want. This does not always require a threat of physical harm.

Laws about extortion are found in many different places. In the United States, it can happen through a phone or the mail. It can even happen across a computer system. In England and Wales, this is often called blackmail. It is a crime to make an unwarranted demand using menaces. In Scotland, it is a crime to use threats of harm to get money or property. Even if the money is actually owed, using a threat makes it a crime. This shows how important it is to follow fair rules.

History shows us many specific examples of these crimes. In March 2008, a man named Anthony Digati was arrested. He wanted money from the New York Life Insurance Company. He threatened to send six million spam emails to hurt their reputation. In 2011, Spanish police caught a man in Málaga. He stole data from 4,000 Nintendo users. He threatened to tell the Spanish Data Agency unless he got what he wanted. These stories show how people use threats to try to gain power.

Today, we see a new version called cyber extortion. This happens when people use the internet to demand gain. In 2020, a health company in Finland called Vastaamo was attacked. Thieves stole 40,000 patient records. They asked for 450,000 euros to stop. They even shared some records to make the victims more afraid. The president of Finland called this attack relentlessly cruel. It shows how important it is to keep digital information safe and private.
