Extortion is a way to get things through fear.

A person might demand money, goods, or special favors. They do this by making threats. They might threaten to hurt someone later. They might also threaten to share secrets.

This is not the same as robbery. In a robbery, someone uses force right away. In extortion, the threat is usually in words. This can be written or spoken. It can even happen through a computer.

Some people use the internet for this. This is called cyber extortion. They might send a mean email to a company. They may say they have stolen private data. Then, they ask for money to stop an attack.

In 2020, a health company in Finland was attacked. People stole 40,000 patient records. The attackers asked for 450,000 euros. They even shared some records to cause more fear. This was a very hard time for the victims. In many places, extortion is a crime. It is often linked to organized crime groups.
