Scientific misconduct

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Scientists must follow rules to be honest. Sometimes, people break these rules. This is called scientific misconduct. It means people do not act in a fair way during research.

There are three main ways people cheat. First is fabrication. This is when a person makes up results. They write down facts that never happened. Second is falsification. This is when someone changes data. They might change parts of an experiment to make it look better. Third is plagiarism. This is when someone takes ideas or words from another person. They do not give credit to the real owner.

Some people even change pictures. They use tools to hide parts of a photo. This can trick other scientists.

Why would someone do this? Some feel a lot of pressure. They must publish many papers to keep their jobs. Others might want more money. This bad behavior can hurt science. It makes it hard for the public to trust what is true. It can even harm people's health if medical facts are wrong.
