Sharing data lets other people check the work. This helps make sure the results are true. Some groups make rules for this. Many funding agencies and journals require it. They want science to be open and clear. This is part of the scientific method. This is the way scientists find truth.

Sometimes, sharing is hard. Some groups stop sharing to keep things safe. They might protect secrets or private info about people. In some cases, the law says they must keep data private.

Other times, scientists just do not share. This is called data withholding. One study found that 94% of some papers had no data. If scientists do not share, they may lose trust. Other researchers might not be able to finish their own work. Sharing helps us act fast during health threats, like the Zika virus. It helps the whole world learn together.
