The scientific community is a large network of people. These people are scientists. They work in many different fields. Some work at universities. Others work in the government or for businesses.

In the 1700s, these groups were like small clubs. They were often just men who liked nature. By the late 1800s, science became a professional job. A man named William Whewell first used the word "scientist" in 1834. This helped people feel part of a big group.

Scientists use a special way to find truth. This is called the scientific method. They share their work in journals. They also go to meetings called conferences.

At these meetings, they talk and debate. This is called peer review. It helps keep the work high quality. Most research is now done by large groups. This is because science is very complex. Some groups, like the National Academy of Sciences, help guide leaders. They write reports for the government. However, no single person speaks for all scientists.
