Scientific community

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

The scientific community is a huge network of people. These people are scientists who work together. They do not all work in the same place. Some work at universities to teach students. Others work in industry, government, or even think tanks. This network is made of many smaller groups. These groups focus on one specific field of study.

Scientists use a special way to find truth. This is called the scientific method. They want to be objective when they study things. To do this, they use a process called peer review. This happens during debates at meetings or in journals. Other scientists check the work to ensure it is good. This helps keep the quality of research very high. It also helps people understand the results correctly.

In the 1700s, science groups were quite different. They were often just small local clubs. These clubs were mostly made of men who studied nature. People called them natural philosophers or natural historians. These groups were more like hobby clubs than professional teams. The modern idea of a scientific community grew later. It really emerged in the second half of the 1800s.

Many things changed during the 19th century. Science became a professional job during this time. Specialized schools and institutions were created for study. A man named William Whewell coined the word "scientist" in 1834. This new word helped people feel like part of a big group. Many scientists now earn a PhD to join the community. This degree shows they can do deep research. They often move from students to professors over time.

No single person speaks for every scientist today. Most research is done by well-funded groups of people. This is because science has become very complex. Some groups, like the National Academy of Sciences, help leaders. They write reports to help governments make big decisions. However, these reports do not represent every single scientist. Science can also lead to big debates in politics. Topics like global warming or stem cells are often discussed.
