Long ago, people did not use the word scientist. Instead, they were called natural philosophers. These scholars studied nature through deep thought and observation.

In the past, many people shared this work. Some were mathematicians, while others were doctors or even religious leaders. Over time, these different roles changed into the specialized jobs we see today.

Science works by using specific methods to find truths.

Many thinkers helped build these methods. For example, Johannes Kepler helped found modern astronomy. Isaac Newton created classical mechanics and refined how scientists study the world.

He also helped invent calculus to solve math problems. Galileo Galilei is often called the father of modern science. He improved tools like the telescope to see the stars better. These steps helped turn simple observations into a real way of learning.

Finding the right name for these experts took a long time.

In 1833, a man named William Whewell created the word scientist. He wanted a new name for people like Mary Somerville.

Before this, people used terms like "men of science." Whewell noticed that people were becoming experts in very specific areas. He thought "philosopher" was too broad for these new specialists. The word scientist did not become common right away. It grew in use during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

You might see scientists working in labs or out in nature. They use tools like thermometers or microscopes to gather facts. Their work connects to everything around us, from the stars to the tiny cells in our bodies. By asking questions, they keep helping us understand our home. This constant search for truth is what makes science so important.
