A physicist is a scientist who studies physics. Physics is the study of how matter and energy interact. This happens at all scales in our physical universe. Some things are tiny, like sub-atomic particles. Other things are huge, like the entire universe. Physicists want to find the root causes of how things work. They often use math to explain these ideas.

There are two main ways physicists work. Experimental physicists focus on observing nature. They build tools and run tests to see what happens. They also analyze the results of these experiments. Theoretical physicists take a different path. They use mathematical modeling to explain and predict things. They create models to understand physical systems.

The study of physics has a very long history. Ancient Babylonian astronomers and Egyptian engineers had early ideas. Greek mathematicians like Euclid and Archimedes also studied these topics. In the 11th century, Ibn al-Haytham used experiments in his work. The Scientific Revolution in Europe changed everything. Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, and Johannes Kepler led the way. Later, Isaac Newton created laws for motion and gravity.

Learning to be a physicist takes a lot of study. Students learn about electricity, magnetism, and light. They must also learn hard math like calculus. To do research, students usually need a doctoral degree. There are many special fields to choose from. You could study stars in astrophysics or tiny bits in particle physics. You might even study medicine or the Earth.

Physicists find jobs in many different places. Many work in schools or government labs. However, the largest employer is private industry. Some physicists work in computer software or business. Others help build medical equipment or new technology. The highest honor a physicist can win is the Nobel Prize in Physics. This prize has been given out since 1901.
