Theoretical physics is a way to understand our world using math.

Scientists use math to build models of how things work. These models are like maps for the natural world. They help explain things we cannot see or touch easily. This is different from experimental physics. Experimental physicists use tools to test things in real life. Theory and experiment work together to help science move forward.

How does a theory work? A theory is a model of how physical events happen. It is not just a math rule or a theorem. A theory must make predictions about what will happen. Scientists judge a theory by how well those guesses match real observations. A good theory can also make new predictions for future tests. Some people use math to build a gut feeling about physics. This is called using math in a heuristic way. This helps when our normal senses fail to understand a problem.

This way of thinking has a very long history. It began over 2,300 years ago with early philosophers. During the Middle Ages, people studied subjects like music and astronomy. Later, the Scientific Revolution changed how we see the world. Copernicus and Kepler helped us understand how planets move. Galileo Galilei was a great thinker and a great tester. Isaac Newton later wrote the Principia Mathematica. He used math to explain how gravity and motion work.

Many famous names have shaped these big ideas. Albert Einstein created the theory of relativity. This changed how we think about space and time. He also explained the photoelectric effect. James Clerk Maxwell unified electricity, magnetism, and light. In the 1900s, scientists like Heisenberg and Schrödinger founded quantum mechanics. This theory helps us understand tiny atoms. Today, scientists use the Standard Model to study even smaller particles. These ideas use math to connect many different things together.

Theoretical physics connects to things you might already know. You know that a ship floats on water. Archimedes used math to explain why this happens. You might know that a vibrating string makes a sound. Pythagoras understood the math behind those musical tones. Even the way heat moves follows these rules. Scientists use these ideas to study everything from tiny particles to the whole universe. They want to find one big way to explain it all.
