Scientists do not always use tools to test things. Instead, they use math to make models. A model is an idea that explains how things work.

These models help us see things we cannot touch. For example, math can show how a ship floats. It can also show how a string makes a sound.

A good theory must make correct guesses. These guesses are called predictions. If a prediction matches what we see, the theory is strong. Scientists also like theories that are simple. This idea is called Occam's razor. It means the simplest idea is often the best.

Theoretical physics has a long history. It began over 2,300 years ago. Many famous people helped build it. Isaac Newton used math to explain gravity. Albert Einstein made new ideas about space and time. These ideas are called relativity. Today, scientists use math to study the whole universe. They want to know how even the smallest parts work.
