In daily life, people use the word "theory" for a guess. But in science, it is much more. A theory is an idea that has been tested many times. It uses many facts to explain why things happen.

Scientists use a set of steps called the scientific method. They make tests and measure results. These tests show if the idea is right. A theory must also make predictions. This means it tells us what might happen next. If new facts are found, a theory can change. Some theories are very strong. We call these established theories. Examples include cell theory or the theory of plate tectonics.

Scientists use these ideas to make new tools. They also use them to help doctors with medicine. A theory is not a law. A law describes a relationship between facts. A theory explains the cause behind those facts.
