A hypothesis is a proposed explanation for something. It is often called an educated guess.

To be scientific, a hypothesis must be based on what we see. It must also make a prediction that we can test. If a hypothesis is proven true many times, it can become a theory. In science, the words hypothesis and theory have different meanings. People often mix them up in daily talk, but they are not the same.

Sometimes, scientists use a working hypothesis. This is a guess they accept for a short time. It helps them keep working on a big problem. These guesses might be incomplete or even wrong. They act like a guide to move research in the right direction. Some thinkers say a hypothesis must be falsifiable. This means there must be a way to show it is false. If you cannot test it, it might not be scientific. Scientists use experiments to see if their ideas match reality. They may also use a thought experiment to test an idea in their minds.
