Problem of induction

We often guess the future by looking at the past.

We see the sun rise every day. This makes us think it will rise tomorrow. This way of thinking is called induction.

A thinker named David Hume studied this a long time ago. He said we cannot be sure our guesses are right. We assume the future will look like the past. But we cannot prove this without using induction itself. This is called circular reasoning. It is like saying induction works because it worked before.

Many people have thought about this puzzle. In India, the Cārvāka school used it to question knowledge. Some thinkers also asked if God could change how the world works. Karl Popper had a different idea. He thought science works by making guesses and then trying to prove them wrong.

There is even a new riddle about this. A man named Nelson Goodman used a strange word. He called it "grue." He used it to show how hard it is to pick the right guess. It is a big mystery for many thinkers.
