He was a philosopher and a historian. He also wrote many essays.

Hume believed that all knowledge comes from experience. This means we learn by seeing and doing things. He thought our feelings guide us more than logic. He said that our passions lead our reason. He also believed that we do not have a single "self." Instead, he said we are just a bundle of different feelings and ideas.

Hume had a hard time early in his life. He spent many years reading and writing. He even got sick from studying too much. Doctors called it the "disease of the learned." Later, he became known for loving good food. He often enjoyed cheese and port wine.

He wrote a massive history of England. This work had six volumes. It was a very big success.
