He lived from 1711 to 1776. Hume was a philosopher, a historian, and an economist. He also wrote many essays about many topics. He is best known for his ideas about how humans learn. He believed in a system called empiricism. This is the idea that all our knowledge comes from our own experiences.

He followed other thinkers like John Locke in this belief. Hume wanted to study the human mind like a science. He wanted to find the natural way that people think and act.

One of Hume's big ideas was about how we see cause and effect.

He argued that we do not actually see one thing cause another. Instead, we just see two events happen one after the other many times. He called this "constant conjunction." Because of this, he thought our beliefs come from mental habits and custom. He also had a famous idea about human behavior. He said that our passions, or our feelings, guide us more than our reason. In fact, he said that reason is a "slave" to our passions. This means our emotions often lead the way in what we do.

Hume's journey into deep thought began when he was very young. He attended the University of Edinburgh at age 12 or even 10. He did not graduate from the university. Around age 18, he had a major discovery in his thinking. This discovery made him want to spend ten years reading and writing. He worked very hard on his first big book. This book was called "A Treatise of Human Nature." He finished it in 1738 when he was 28 years old. It was a very difficult time for him, and he even got sick.

His early life was not always easy or wealthy.

He was born in Edinburgh to Catherine and Joseph Home. His father died when David was only two years old. Catherine raised her children on her own. As a young man, Hume had very little money. He even worked as a merchant's assistant in France for a while. He tried to become a professor at the University of Edinburgh. However, some people protested because they thought he did not believe in God. Even so, he became a very successful writer. He wrote a massive six-volume history of England that became a bestseller.

Hume's ideas changed many different fields of study. His work helped shape how people think about science and logic. He also influenced how people study the mind and religion. A famous thinker named Immanuel Kant said Hume's work woke him up from his "dogmatic slumbers." This means Hume's ideas helped Kant start thinking in new ways. Today, we still study Hume's ideas in many schools. He showed us that wondering about our own minds is a great way to learn. His life shows how much one person can change the world of ideas.
