He was a polymath, which means he studied many different subjects. These subjects included history, math, and even how light works. He is most famous for his 1651 book called Leviathan. This book explains his ideas about how people live in a society. Many people believe he helped start modern political philosophy.

Hobbes had a very busy life of learning and travel. He studied at the University of Oxford and Cambridge. Later, he worked as a tutor for the Cavendish family. This job let him travel across Europe between 1610 and 1615. During his travels, he met many important people. One famous scientist he visited was Galileo Galilei in Florence. These experiences helped him form his own deep ideas.

His ideas were shaped by the world around him. While living in Paris, he studied how things move. He wanted to show how physical motion explains the world. He also looked at how humans feel emotions like passion. Hobbes wanted to connect the study of bodies to the study of people. Finally, he wanted to show how people join together to form a state. He believed this system would stop people from living in misery.

War changed how Hobbes thought about government. He lived through the English Civil War from 1642 to 1651. This war was a very hard and violent time. It was fought between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. Seeing this conflict made him believe in strong leaders. In Leviathan, he argued for an absolute sovereign to keep order. He used the idea of a social contract to explain this. This is an agreement where people follow rules to stay safe.

Hobbes wrote many important books during his long life. Aside from Leviathan, he wrote De Cive in 1642. He also wrote De Corpore in 1655 and De Homine in 1658. A book called Behemoth was published after he died in 1679.
