He is often called the "father of liberalism." This is because his ideas changed how people think about freedom. He was both a philosopher and a doctor. He spent much of his life studying how people think and how they should be governed. His work helped shape the modern world. Many people still look to his ideas today.

Locke had very specific ideas about how we learn. He believed the human mind starts as a blank slate. This idea is known by the Latin name "tabula rasa." He argued that we are not born with ideas already in our heads. Instead, we gain knowledge through our senses. This means we learn by seeing, touching, and hearing the world. This way of thinking is called empiricism. It focuses on using experience to understand truth.

Locke's life was full of big changes and travel. He was born in 1632 in a village called Wrington. He studied at the Westminster School and then at Christ Church, Oxford. During his time at Oxford, he studied medicine and science. He became a member of the Royal Society in 1668. He also worked closely with a powerful man named Lord Shaftesbury. When Shaftesbury lost his influence, Locke had to live in the Netherlands for five years.

While in exile, Locke wrote some of his most important books. He wrote "Two Treatises of Government" around 1689. This book argued that a government needs the consent of the people. He believed people have a right to revolt if a government is unfair. He also wrote about religious tolerance in another book. He felt that religion should be a private choice for each person. This idea helped lead to the separation of church and state.

His ideas traveled far beyond the borders of England. Many famous thinkers, like Voltaire and Rousseau, studied his work. His writings even helped the leaders of the American Revolution. Thomas Jefferson used Locke's ideas when he wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Today, his principles help protect basic rights and freedoms. We see his influence in how many modern governments work. His legacy lives on in the way we value individual liberty.
