She lived from 1666 to 1731. Many people call her an early feminist. This means she spoke up for the rights of women. She believed that women were just as smart as men. She thought women deserved the same chances to learn. This was a very big idea in her time. She used her writing to change how people thought about women.

Her ideas focused on how women could use their minds.

She wrote a book called "A Serious Proposal to the Ladies." In this book, she planned a special college for women. She wanted them to study many different things. She believed that learning would help women be more independent. She also wrote about marriage in another book. She told women to look for a partner who was also a good friend. She said that being smart would help women make better choices in life.

Mary was born in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Her father was a coal merchant. She did not go to a formal school as a child. Instead, she learned things from her uncle. He was a very educated man. When she was a young woman, she moved to London. There, she met many other smart and influential women. These women helped her share her ideas with the world. She also received help from a man named William Sancroft.

Mary's work was very important to many people. She used the ideas of a philosopher named René Descartes. He taught that the mind and body are separate. This helped Mary argue that women have the same ability to reason as men. She even asked a famous question about freedom. She asked why women were not born free if men were. Her books were often published without her name on them. She used the sign "By a Lover of her Sex" to show her support for women.

In her later years, Mary did very practical things. She moved away from public life to help others. She helped lead a charity school for girls in Chelsea.
