She was born in Milan in 1718. Her father was a wealthy silk merchant named Pietro Agnesi. Maria was a child prodigy who learned many things very quickly. By the age of five, she could speak Italian and French. By age eleven, she knew seven different languages. People even called her the "Seven-Tongued Orator."

Maria loved to study hard things like math and philosophy. She studied geometry and ballistics when she was only fourteen. Later, she studied calculus with a mathematician named Ramiro Rampinelli. Calculus is a way to study how things change. In 1748, she published a very important book. It was called *Instituzioni analitiche*. This book was a handbook to help young people learn math. It helped explain how to use algebra with calculus.

Her math book became very famous all over the world. It was even translated into French and English. Many important people praised her hard work. Empress Maria Theresa sent her a diamond ring and a crystal case. Pope Benedict XIV sent her a gold medal and a gold wreath. Because of her smarts, she was appointed as a professor at the University of Bologna in 1750. She was only the second woman ever to be a university professor.

One special thing in math is named after her. In her book, she talked about a specific curve. In Italian, she called this curve a *versiera*. This word means "turning in every direction." However, the word could also mean a "witch." Because of this, people started calling the shape the "Witch of Agnesi."

This name stuck and is still used by mathematicians today.

After her father died in 1752, Maria changed her focus. She spent the rest of her life helping people in need. She studied religion and worked with the poor and the sick. She even gave away the expensive gifts she had received. She wanted to use everything she had to help others. Maria died in 1799 and was buried in a grave for the poor.
