Bernard Bolzano was a thinker who lived a very busy life. He was a mathematician, a philosopher, and a Catholic priest. He was born on October 5, 1781, in a place called Bohemia. His father was from Italy, but his mother came from a German-speaking family in Prague. Bolzano grew up in Prague and studied many different things. He went to the University of Prague to learn math, physics, and philosophy. Later, he also studied theology to become a priest in 1804. He was a very popular teacher at the university.

Bolzano had very strong beliefs about how people should live. He believed that war was a waste and that nations should seek peace. He wanted to change how schools and governments worked to help people live better. These ideas were very liberal for his time. Because of these views, the Austrian authorities became unhappy with him. In 1819, they took away his job as a professor. They sent him away to live in the countryside. Even though he could not publish in big journals, he kept writing his ideas in smaller books.

In the world of math, Bolzano wanted things to be very exact. Many mathematicians back then used ideas like time or motion to explain math. Bolzano thought this was not the best way. He wanted math to be more rigorous, which means very strict and careful. He wrote three important books about this between 1810 and 1817. He helped create a new way to understand a mathematical limit. A limit is a value that a number gets closer and closer to. He also proved important rules about algebra and the intermediate value theorem.

Bolzano also spent a lot of time studying logic. Logic is the study of how we use reason to find truths. In his 1837 book, the Theory of Science, he explored how we know things. He believed that truths exist even if no person is thinking about them. He talked about ideas that exist in their own realm. For example, he spoke about a "proposition in itself." This is a statement that is true or false even if no one says it out loud. He also looked at how ideas can exist without having a real object in the world.

Many famous thinkers later realized how important Bolzano's work really was. Some of his math ideas were not fully understood until fifty years later. A mathematician named Karl Weierstrass later worked on similar ideas. Today, people use the name Bolzano–Weierstrass theorem to honor him. His work on logic was also admired by great thinkers like Georg Cantor. Even though much of his work was hidden for a long time, it changed how we see the world. He showed us that math and logic are built on very deep and steady rules.
