Many people call him the father of analytic philosophy. This is a way of thinking about language and logic. He spent his life studying how math and words work together. He was a professor at the University of Jena. Frege is now seen as one of the greatest logicians since Aristotle. His ideas changed how we understand the very foundations of math.

Frege wanted to prove that math grows out of logic. This big idea is known as logicism. He believed math should not rely on human intuition. Instead, math proofs should be purely logical and have no gaps. To do this, he created a new system called the Begriffsschrift. This book introduced a new way to use variables and functions. His system could handle much harder sentences than older methods. For example, it could easily explain complex math statements.

Frege was born in 1848 in Wismar, Germany. His father, Carl, was a headmaster of a school for girls.

As a child, Frege learned about the structure of language from his father's books. He later studied at the University of Jena starting in 1869. There, he met a very important teacher named Ernst Abbe. Abbe was a physicist and a trusted friend to Frege. Frege also studied in Göttingen to learn more about math. He earned his doctorate in 1873 under a teacher named Schering.

Frege wrote several very important books during his career. His book, The Foundations of Arithmetic, is a famous text. He also wrote Basic Laws of Arithmetic to explain his ideas.

In 1903, a thinker named Bertrand Russell wrote him a letter. Russell showed a problem in one of Frege's main rules. This was a very difficult moment for the scientist. Frege even wrote a special appendix to explain the mistake. He lived in a house in Jena with his neighbor.

Even though he was a brilliant thinker, many people ignored him while he was alive. Later generations of philosophers helped make his work famous again. Thinkers like Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittgenstein introduced his ideas to the world. Today, his work is a part of many different subjects. It is used in the study of truth and the study of sets. His tools are still used in modern logic and math. We can see his influence in how we use language and numbers today.
