Frege published several seminal texts that shaped modern thought. His book, The Foundations of Arithmetic, is a key text for the logicist project. It is often cited as the starting point for the "linguistic turn" in philosophy. He also wrote the Basic Laws of Arithmetic in two volumes. In 1893 and 1903, he attempted to derive all arithmetic laws from logical axioms. However, a famous crisis occurred just as the second volume was going to press. 
Russell showed that Frege's "Basic Law V" led to a contradiction. The paradox involved the set of all things that are not members of themselves. This discovery meant Frege's system was inconsistent. Frege was deeply affected by this news. He wrote a very honest appendix to his book. He noted how unfortunate it is for a scientist to have their foundations shaken at the end of a project. Although his specific remedy was not perfect, modern thinkers like George Boolos have found ways to salvage parts of his program. They use different versions of his laws to maintain consistency.
Today, Frege's influence is seen across many different fields. His machinery of formalization is essential to many famous works. This includes Bertrand Russell's Principia Mathematica and Kurt Gödel's incompleteness theorems. His work also informs Alfred Tarski's theory of truth.
