Analytic philosophy is a major way of thinking in Western countries. It is a style of philosophy that focuses on being very clear.

Many thinkers in this group use logic to solve hard problems. They also look closely at math and the natural sciences. One big part of this is the "linguistic turn." This means they study how language and meaning work. They want to use clear prose and strict rules for their arguments. This style is often different from "continental philosophy," which is found mostly in Europe.

This way of thinking works by breaking big ideas into small parts. This is called analysis.

Thinkers look at how words connect to things in the real world. For example, Gottlob Frege studied how words have different kinds of meaning. He showed that a word's meaning can change based on the sentence around it. He also looked at how math and logic are connected. Some thinkers use math to show how sentences are built. This helps them find the true structure of a thought. They try to make sure every idea is precise and easy to check.

This movement began to grow around the turn of the twentieth century. It became the main style of philosophy in the second half of that century.

Many important people helped build it. Gottlob Frege is known as the father of analytic philosophy. He was a professor at the University of Jena in Germany. Later, thinkers like Bertrand Russell and G. E. Moore led a "revolt" against older ideas. They wanted to move away from ideas that were too confusing or obscure. Other famous names include Ludwig Wittgenstein and Rudolf Carnap. These people changed how we study logic and language.

There are many specific facts and names in this history. Franz Brentano was a philosopher from the University of Vienna. In 1874, he wrote about "intentionality," which is the idea that thoughts are "about" something.

Bertrand Russell wrote a very famous essay in 1905 called "On Denoting." In this paper, he used descriptions to explain how we name things. He also worked on a huge book called "Principia Mathematica" with Alfred North Whitehead. This book was published between 1910 and 1913. It helped many people become interested in using math for logic. These books and papers are still studied by students today.

Analytic philosophy connects to many things you might already know. If you study math, you are using logic similar to these thinkers. If you study science, you are looking for clear facts about the world. Many people use the rules of logic to win debates or solve puzzles. Even the way we use language to be clear comes from these ideas. It is a way to make sure our thoughts match the real world. By asking deep questions about words, these thinkers help us understand how we communicate. It is a tool for making sense of everything around us.
