Hypatia was the daughter of a man named Theon.

Theon was also a famous mathematician in Alexandria. He led a school called the Mouseion. Theon was known for fixing errors in old math books. This made his books very popular for a long time. Hypatia learned much of her knowledge from her father. Some people think she was even better at math than he was.
