Theon of Alexandria was a Greek scholar and mathematician. He lived in the city of Alexandria in Egypt. He likely led a famous school called the Mouseion. This school was very special and highly prestigious. Theon was a busy man who studied many things. He made predictions about solar and lunar eclipses in 364. These are events where the sun or moon is blocked. He lived during the time of the ruler Theodosius I.

Much of Theon's work involved helping students learn math. He edited a very important book called the Elements. This book was written by a mathematician named Euclid. Theon wanted to make the text easier to study. He added more details when an argument felt too short. He also tried to fix mistakes in the original writing. He wanted the math to be more standard for learners. This helped people understand the ideas much better.

History tells us that Theon was a great teacher. He wrote many commentaries to explain difficult math books. A commentary is a set of notes that explains a text. He wrote about the works of Euclid and Ptolemy. One of his books was about the Almagest. This is a famous book about the stars and space. He also wrote about how to use an astrolabe. An astrolabe is a tool used to study the sky.

Family was very important to Theon's work in math. His daughter was named Hypatia and she was also a mathematician. She was very famous and later led his school. Theon said that Hypatia helped him with his work. She contributed to Book III of the Almagest. Theon also dedicated a commentary to a boy named Epiphanius. This boy might have been his son. They shared a love for learning and the stars.

We can still see the name of Theon today. There is a lunar crater named Theon Junior. This crater is on the moon to honor him. Theon's work helped pass on Greek knowledge to later ages. His ideas about the sky were very important. He used a special system for his math calculations. This system used base sixty to find his answers. He was a vital part of the history of math.
